Born in London, Dr. Brian M. Lawrence is a world-renowned pioneer in essential oil research. His journey began in the pharmaceutical industry before he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study in Chicago. He later earned his doctorate in pharmacognosy from the State University in Groningen, the Netherlands.

A prolific author and editor, Dr. Lawrence founded the Journal of Essential Oil Research (JEOR) in 1989 and has served as the scientific editor of Perfumer and Flavorist for over 30 years.
